Summit’s ACHIEVE Community Garden brings families together to share the benefits of organic gardening for a healthier community. The garden is administered though the Summit Area YMCA on land located on Beauvoir Avenue, leased from Overlook Hospital.

Applications for a garden plot are submitted in January and February and plots are assigned by lottery in March. Financial aid is available for plot rental.

The garden opened in 2013 through Action Communities for Health, Innovation & Environmental Change (ACHIEVE), a program sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control to facilitate changes in policies, systems and built environments within communities to encourage healthier lifestyles.

In addition to the grant from the CDC, financial support also came from the Overlook Foundation, The NJ Committee for Garden Clubs, the Summit Area Public Foundation, and the Junior League of Summit. Construction and maintenance of the garden benefits from many hours of volunteer labor and in kind donations from local businesses.

Volunteers are welcome especially to help with the garden area dedicated to growing food for St. Teresa’s Food Pantry.
